Since the last post about Baby "K", she has experienced many ups and downs. A week and a half ago, the cardiologist and cardiac surgeon decided that Baby K needed another surgery because the original shunt was not allowing adequate blood flow and, as a result, the pulmonary arteries were collasping. To make a long story short, the new shunt worked too well and sent all of the blood to the lungs. The rest of the body, including the heart, were oxygen deprived. Last Thursday Baby K ended up on ECMO which is an external heart/lung bypass machine to give her heart time to heal from the stress. She experienced a "brain bleed" Friday. She should have come off the ECMO immediately, but her heart was unable to function on its own. Pleas were made to God to keep the brain from bleeding more, to strengthen her heart, and to help her fight the odds. Yesterday the medical team successfully weaned Baby K from the ECMO machine. While the situation remains extremely critical, she has stayed stable for 24 hours. Our prayers were answered! Please continue to pray for Baby K and her exhausted and emotionally spent parents. Every day she remains stable, her chances for recovery improve.
In anticipation of the surgery, Baby K and her parents came to the studio a week ago this past Saturday for some family pictures. Remember - Dad could not be at the hospital when I took the first pictures. Take a peak; she is beautiful and her parents love her so much.
